Illustrating the lockdown (part 3)
The first adaptation to how I would have ordinarily worked pre-lockdown was the move to illustrating online meetings (which would usually have been a live event)
I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly clients pivoted to using visual minutes for virtual meetings and workshops, and how relatively easy it was to adapt graphic facilitation techniques to a WFH set up.
I was already familiar with drawing digitally on an iPad, which now replaced the foam boards or paper I would usually draw on, so I can quickly and easily capture a conversation while sitting at my desk. The ‘share screen’ function (once I got the hang of it) allows for fairly seamless updates of how the visual minutes are progressing meaning that my presence in the meeting wasn’t obtrusive to the flow of the conversation and that we could easily co-create the final result.
Of course it can never really recreate the atmosphere of a live event and illustrating on a large scale, to an even larger audience! (which I loved doing before the lockdown, and hope to do again in the future) However I do believe it is a great way to keep graphic facilitation and creative thinking as a part of your workplace toolkit and stave off some of the ‘zoom call fatigue’ that everyone is now more than familiar with.
